The Aftermath of the Holidays for Your Home

The holiday hubbub is coming to a close, it’s time to slow down, put everything back to normal and prepare to bring in a New Year. We’ve all had a busy season and are ready to pack up the holiday decor, and that can get a little overwhelming. Not to mention that once everything is put away, the return to the ordinariness of the home can feel a bit empty. But neither needs to be overwhelming or disappointing with best methods for decor storage and exciting new home styling for the New Year. To close out 2024, we’re breaking down the aftermath of the holidays with helpful solutions.

The “How To” for Holiday Decor Storage:

  • To begin, while taking down all of the seasonal decor, assess each piece as you do. Is it in good condition? Has it seen better days? Is it still in style or on trend, or is it a timeless piece? Does it need to be stored with special care? Can you see yourself using each piece next year? As you’re preparing to put everything away, declutter, discard or donate what you see fit. This first step will not only allow you to store more efficiently but will also save you the trouble next year of sorting it all out next year!

  • Take photos of how you decorated each area of your home, keep them filed away for next year for a quick refresh of how to recreate the decor. Pack each area or room organized together.

  • Upcycle and recycle existing items in your home for organized and safe storage. Egg crates and plastic cups are the perfect homes for ornaments while coffee filters are great to add some extra packing to the really delicate ones. We all have plenty of empty Amazon boxes by this time of year, cut them up and use them to neatly wrap lights and garland. You know you have trash bags and hangers too, use them to hang and wrap wreaths, now you can easily store them in the back of a closet without worrying about them getting flattened. Oh, and grab a trash can to keep all the extra rolls of wrapping paper gathered.

  • Opt for clear storage bins when possible and be sure to label. Blue painters tape and a sharpie make for great labeling. As you’re putting everything in its place, stack and sort in the order in which you will want to decorate next year, your future self will thank you!

Ok, the holiday decor is all packed away, the house is back to its normal state. At this juncture, we can either find ourselves feeling a bit sad without the exciting fun of the seasonal decor or feeling the need to bring some new life and style into our homes for the New Year.
